Tali Roth @talirothdesigns

Founder and Principal of Interior Design Studio, Tali Roth Designs

Whether you are renting or renovating the concept of nesting in a home is human nature, but there is a difference between nesting and considerate deliberate design and intention. Sometimes it may be due to access, the expense or available time, or sometimes people have a passion and a natural eye for it, where as others simply don’t. But what if we could breakdown it down to the basics, what to consider when renovating? Furthermore, when purchasing or procuring furniture for existing spaces? Does style win over measurements and precision? How do you even discover your style and then apply that to your home? That’s where we bring in renowned Interior Designer Tali Roth. Tali is the Founder and Principal Designer of Tali Roth Designs located in both Melbourne and New York, and she sits down with us to work through her career journey, her juggle running a business on two sides of the world, and all the other hats she wears, as well as answering our where to start questions - how do you tackle, consider and style your home, sweet home?

“I want to be in a creative industry, I want to get paid for what I do, and I never want to be in a position again, where someone is not paying me for  the good things I’ve got in my brain”

TOP TIPS

Deep dive into what your true aesthetic is:

  • What’s the best you have ever felt and where?

  • Who’s house did you walk into as a kid and love?

  • Then start with planning and the flow of the space

  • And then look at materiality but everything should connect back to your original mission statement

When Choosing Carpets & Rugs think about the following:

  • Wool carpets can be expensive but are meant to be the best for removing stains

  • Viscose creates shine, and can look great but liquid shrivels the fibre and can easily damage

  • Sisal is very hard wearing,  but you can’t steam clean

Measurements! Measurements! Measurements!

  • Tip – Don’t get carried away with what is pretty, over what fits the space. Measure the area you are trying to fill and then find what fits it!

  • Hot Tip! If it’s furniture – Zoe uses masking tape to lay out the measurement and see how it fits the floor, wall or space prior to purchase!

Art

Australia has incredible Artists! Source local and you are bound to obtain an investment keeper!

Also, don’t forget auction houses, huge ranges go of affordable prints, posters and pieces go through local auction houses all the time. Have a look at what auctions houses are around you and most now have online auctions too!

Spend on what’s important to you and save the rest!

Think about the values on how you want to live. Is hosting family dinner important? The spend on the dining chairs and dining table. Is being comfortable on a couch for Friday night football? Then spend on a good comfy couch. Put your money into less pieces you will use more of, and don’t worry so much about the spaces people won’t see or use, whilst you save for more.
