Bec and Zoe agree they grew up in an era that places an unhealthy value on youth and appearance, but they can’t help the internal struggle with their belief in valuing the ageing process, versus their desire to compete with what the media and Instagram portray.
James Vivian (Dermal Specialist, Owner of James Vivian Skin Clinic and Creator of Viviology Skin Care Range) chats about skin health versus attempting to maintain youth, and what are the basics women should focus on to manage your skin health, to the more advanced products and treatments and their impacts.
“There can never ever be a one size fits all approach to skin”
Interview Top Tips
Building a Skin Care Routine:
The Basics:
Always start with your basics, they’re the most unsexiest of products but always start with your cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen – The top 3.
You have to wash your face, to aid the penetration of your skin care and for general hygiene and clean looking skin.
Moisturiser is going to help lock in your natural moisturiser, because our skin is always creating its own level hydration and it’s really important we help support that with our moisturiser and but also lock it in.
Our skin is prone to hyper sensitivity through the cosmetics we use afterwards with make up or the environment around stress eg. stress or medications.
Ageing is such a big concern for so many, and the #1 product for age management is sunscreen. None of this matters (treatments or product use) if you are not wearing sunscreen every day, and not just wearing your sunscreen but reapplying your sunscreen every day.
From the Basics to how to build your routine further:
This is based on your concerns which could be acne symptoms, hyperpigmentation, age management, skin sensitivity, dehydration or signs of redness.
The best way to build this further is to engage Dermal Therapist professional, and follow their guidance on the more advanced product use.
The top 3 more advanced products to look out for after your basics:
Vitamin A – In the evening – The most well-regarded ingredient for age management.
Vitamin B – Morning and Night – helps cushion the introduction to the other ingredients, boost the powers of Vitamin C & A and brightens,
Vitamin C – Start with Vitamin C during the day. Always make sure you are pairing your sunscreen with a powerful antioxidant, or compound of antioxidants that helps prevent signs of sun damage, hyperpigmentation, skin thickening or skin thinning depending on what area of the skin. Vitamin C also has a brightening effect.
James Favourite – Exfoliation! If you want brighter lighter skin, you can achieve that by regular exfoliation. The best way to exfoliate is with AHA’s, Lactic Acid or Fruit Based Acids. You can do this as regularly as irregularly as needed, but everyone should exfoliate!
Superficial treatments: Chemical Peels – They help brighten, release congestion, they help with breakouts and hyperpigmentation
Deeper layer treatments: Laser treatments, light-based therapies, collagen induction therapies. They create more controlled wounding in the skin, to effect deeper change in the skin through things like pore size, fine lines and wrinkles, and volumising.
At home electronic treatments eg. LED masks – Generally they are required to keep very low energy output, so they are quite safe, but in turn not as effective, therefore consider their expense versus connecting with a professional.
James Top 5 Overall Tips!
Sun Protection – wear hats, sunglasses and SPF – and reapply!
Not everyone can reach a dermal therapist – so skin care at home in any way shape or form!
If you want to start with dermal therapy treatments, start small!
2 Minute cleanse – massaging for 2 minutes will stimulate, plump and firm!
Don’t cleanse with extremely hot water, it’s not good for the skin. Cool your showers down!
